(60 km), situated between Bandipora & Sopore, this is the largest freshwater lake in India, spread over an area of 125 sq km (length 24 km, breadth 8 km). Circumference of lake 48km is full of mountains and dense forests. Zaina Lank an island built by Sultan Zainulabidin in 1443, is said to have been built as a storm refuge for boatmen in the lake.
Legend describes Wular as a ‘cave’ where a city was once swallowed up by the earthquakes and floods. Wular is a mystic lake that still finds some takers who are interested to see its vastness and admire its surroundings. The water nuts grow in a large quantity in some portions of lake; this provides bread & butter to many and a nut to relish for others.
