Hassanbad Imambara and Graveyard by Ahanger HOBO.

Hassanbad is named after the Shia scholar Baba Hassan and the Hassanbad locality was once the epicenter of arts and crafts in Srinagar. Now a quiet and quaint locality you can reach here by Shikara from the Dal or walk toward the Nageen Lake from the Gurdwara in Rainawari and take a right before crossing the bridge. Hassanbad Immam Burrah is used by Shias during the holy month of Muharram. The current red and green building is recently built, the original being destroyed. The architecture of the building is not of much interest but head inside and you will get a really good glimpse of Shiite Islam culture. Inside there is a rare arial photograph of the shrines of Imam Hussain and Imam Hassan taken at Karbala, Iraq before the reign of Saddam Hussain. The surrounding graveyard is of the most interest to visitors. Inside there are graves of many famous Kashmiri Shia’s, including the Kashmiri poets who composed the Marcia in Kashmiri some three hundred year ago. The Marcia is a poetic eulogy recited every year during the month of Muharram and describes the martyrdom of Karbala. There are some beautiful gravestones in this graveyard, complete with exquisite stone calligraphy in Persian and Arabic, dating some four hundred years back. The oldest grave dates back to 1224AD and is located in the upper graveyard. There is also a small open-air shrine of Mirza Sahib.
